Amber ThreadPrivate Tutoring

Maths · Physics · Chemistry

Steady tutoring that follows one thread at a time.

Amber Thread is the small tutoring practice of Iris Calder — patient, plainly explained lessons for students from Key Stage 3 through A-Level, and for adults returning to study.

How it looks One learner, one worked problem, and enough quiet to actually think it through.

The tutor

I teach the step that was skipped, not the whole textbook again.

Most students arriving here are not stuck on everything. They are stuck on one or two steps — a negative sign, a rearranged formula, a definition that was never quite pinned down — and the rest of the subject has been wobbling on top of it. The first few sessions are about finding that step.

I taught secondary maths and physics for nine years before tutoring full time, which means I know what the mark schemes actually reward and where the usual explanations go thin. Sessions are unhurried and talkative: you work, I listen to how you work, and we fix the method rather than the single answer.

Everything is planned around the student's own exam board and school timetable, so homework, mock papers and revision all pull in the same direction instead of competing.

Subjects & levels

Six things I teach, and nothing I don't.

A short list on purpose. If a subject isn't here, I would rather say so than take the booking and read ahead the night before.

01

Maths

Algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus taught through worked problems, with the working written out in full until it sticks.

KS3 · GCSE · A-Level

02

Physics

Mechanics, waves, electricity and fields — including the practical write-ups and the six-mark explanation questions students tend to lose marks on.

GCSE · A-Level

03

Chemistry

Moles, bonding, energetics and organic mechanisms, with a steady focus on calculation layout and correct units.

GCSE · AS

04

Revision technique

How to make a usable timetable, what spaced practice looks like in a real week, and how to mark your own past papers honestly.

All levels

05

Entrance exam prep

Non-routine problem solving for selective-school papers, built on reasoning out loud rather than memorised question types.

Ages 10–11

06

Adult returners

Access-course and functional maths for people coming back to study years later, starting wherever the gaps actually begin.

Foundation · GCSE

How sessions work

Three steps, then a steady weekly rhythm.

No contracts and no term-long commitment. If it isn't working after a month, say so and we'll stop.

  1. A short intro call

Fifteen minutes, free, with a parent or the student. You tell me the subject, the exam board and what's gone wrong lately; I tell you honestly whether I'm the right person for it.

  2. A first session and a plan

The first full session is diagnostic. I set a few problems, watch the method, and afterwards send a short written plan: what we'll cover, in what order, and what to practise between sessions.

  3. Weekly sessions and notes

A fixed slot each week, online or at a quiet table in person. Every session ends with a two-line summary of what we did and what's next, sent to whoever needs it.

The usual choice: one learner, one subject, a fixed weekly slot.

£48

per 55-minute session

  • Diagnostic first session and written plan
  • Materials matched to your exam board
  • Session summary after every lesson

Paired sessions

Two learners at the same level, working side by side on the same topics.

£32

per learner, per 55 minutes

  • Shared plan agreed with both families
  • Problems set for pairs to talk through
  • Separate notes for each learner

Exam intensive

Longer sessions in the weeks before papers, built around timed practice.

£68

per 90-minute session

  • Past-paper work under exam timing
  • Marking against the real scheme, together
  • A short list of topics to drill alone

In-person sessions are held at a quiet study room by arrangement; online sessions use a shared whiteboard so the working stays visible afterwards. Sessions cancelled with more than 24 hours' notice are never charged.

Questions

The things parents ask first.

Is online as good as in person?

For maths and physics, yes — with a shared whiteboard I can see the working as it happens, which is the part that matters. Younger students sometimes focus better in person, so we can try one of each and decide.

How much homework will you set?

Enough to practise the method and no more: usually three or four problems, or one short past-paper section. School work always takes priority, and if a week is overloaded we simply skip it.

Do parents hear how it's going?

After every session I send a two-line note on what we covered and what's next. For older students I send it to them and copy a parent in, which keeps everyone in the loop without talking over the student.

Can you follow our exam board?

Yes. Tell me the board and specification at the intro call and I'll plan from the relevant specification and its own past papers, rather than a generic syllabus.

What if we need to cancel?

More than 24 hours' notice and there's no charge; inside that, the session is charged unless someone is unwell. Illness is never charged for.

Do sessions run in the school holidays?

Only if you want them to. Some families pause entirely, others keep a lighter fortnightly slot. Holiday weeks are agreed at the end of the preceding term.

Enquire

Tell me who's learning and what's gone sideways.

A few lines is plenty. I'll reply with whether I have a slot that fits, and we can arrange the free intro call from there.

There are four places open this term, and I keep the list short on purpose so every student gets properly planned sessions.
