Algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus taught through worked problems, with the working written out in full until it sticks.

Amber Thread is the small tutoring practice of Iris Calder — patient, plainly explained lessons for students from Key Stage 3 through A-Level, and for adults returning to study.
How it looks One learner, one worked problem, and enough quiet to actually think it through.
The tutor
Most students arriving here are not stuck on everything. They are stuck on one or two steps — a negative sign, a rearranged formula, a definition that was never quite pinned down — and the rest of the subject has been wobbling on top of it. The first few sessions are about finding that step.
I taught secondary maths and physics for nine years before tutoring full time, which means I know what the mark schemes actually reward and where the usual explanations go thin. Sessions are unhurried and talkative: you work, I listen to how you work, and we fix the method rather than the single answer.
Everything is planned around the student's own exam board and school timetable, so homework, mock papers and revision all pull in the same direction instead of competing.

Subjects & levels
A short list on purpose. If a subject isn't here, I would rather say so than take the booking and read ahead the night before.

How sessions work
No contracts and no term-long commitment. If it isn't working after a month, say so and we'll stop.
Fifteen minutes, free, with a parent or the student. You tell me the subject, the exam board and what's gone wrong lately; I tell you honestly whether I'm the right person for it.
The first full session is diagnostic. I set a few problems, watch the method, and afterwards send a short written plan: what we'll cover, in what order, and what to practise between sessions.
A fixed slot each week, online or at a quiet table in person. Every session ends with a two-line summary of what we did and what's next, sent to whoever needs it.
Tuition
The same preparation goes into every session, whichever format you choose. Session notes and between-session questions by email are included throughout.
The usual choice: one learner, one subject, a fixed weekly slot.
£48
per 55-minute session
Two learners at the same level, working side by side on the same topics.
£32
per learner, per 55 minutes
Longer sessions in the weeks before papers, built around timed practice.
£68
per 90-minute session
In-person sessions are held at a quiet study room by arrangement; online sessions use a shared whiteboard so the working stays visible afterwards. Sessions cancelled with more than 24 hours' notice are never charged.
Questions
For maths and physics, yes — with a shared whiteboard I can see the working as it happens, which is the part that matters. Younger students sometimes focus better in person, so we can try one of each and decide.
Enough to practise the method and no more: usually three or four problems, or one short past-paper section. School work always takes priority, and if a week is overloaded we simply skip it.
After every session I send a two-line note on what we covered and what's next. For older students I send it to them and copy a parent in, which keeps everyone in the loop without talking over the student.
Yes. Tell me the board and specification at the intro call and I'll plan from the relevant specification and its own past papers, rather than a generic syllabus.
More than 24 hours' notice and there's no charge; inside that, the session is charged unless someone is unwell. Illness is never charged for.
Only if you want them to. Some families pause entirely, others keep a lighter fortnightly slot. Holiday weeks are agreed at the end of the preceding term.
Enquire
A few lines is plenty. I'll reply with whether I have a slot that fits, and we can arrange the free intro call from there.
There are four places open this term, and I keep the list short on purpose so every student gets properly planned sessions.
